Analysis & Turning Points

  • Early dominance: Raines jumped on Lake Mary quickly, putting the Rams in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.

  • Explosive plays: Big pass connections, including an 80-yard strike to Ziyon Butler, fueled Raines’ offensive outburst.

  • Special teams edge: Field position and coverage consistently favored Raines, creating short fields and momentum swings.

  • Lake Mary’s struggles: The Rams showed flashes in the run game but couldn’t sustain drives, finishing without a touchdown.

Raines head coach Donovan Masline praised his team’s effort in a hostile road environment:

“It’s big. We know how to come out on the road in a territory unfamiliar to us and just play a great team, team effort, team football in all three phases—offense, defense, and special teams. So it was a big win versus a 7A team. You always want to get a win up under your belt against an opponent that has more numbers, more resources, but we came out. Great team win.”

On his special teams’ execution:

“We harped on it all week long. We came out in the third quarter last week a little flat. We gave up a big special teams run on kickoff return and they were able to go down and score and we could have shut them out and kind of ended the game, but we let them stick around. So this week was all about a third quarter explosion, second half explosion. And then we tell them all the time, different ways it’s going to come. It may come on offense, it may come on defense, it may come on special teams, but all the kids are just locked in on getting better and working and winning as a team.”

Looking ahead, Masline emphasized momentum:

“It’s a big win. It’s momentum going into the bye week. It doesn’t matter about the opponent that we’re playing—it matters about what we’re doing right as a program, what we’re doing right in our scheme, and the sky’s the limit. The future is bright for this season. I know the kids are going to continue to lock in. They’re on a mission and I’m just going here to support and navigate them.”

Player’s Perspective

Quarterback Timothy Cole said the Vikings entered the game determined to prove themselves against a powerhouse opponent:

“We came in with this chip on our shoulder. We knew what we had to come in here and face—a hostile crowd, 7A football, a great team, state runner-ups just like us. So we had to come out and play some Raines football, and that’s what we did.”

Cole also praised the energy from special teams and his teammates’ playmaking:

“I don’t like being on the sideline too much, but if we putting up points, man, I’m excited. I’m happy for my teammates, I’m excited for them boys. Ziyon Butler, Eddie Hinton, and them boys got in the end zone and I’m just proud of them boys.”

Impact & What’s Next

The win improved Raines to 3–0, underscoring their strength as one of Jacksonville’s top programs. Lake Mary dropped to 2–2, snapping their home field momentum and showing areas to regroup before district play heats up.

For Raines, the victory was more than just a lopsided score—it was a confidence-building performance that showcased their depth, discipline, and balance in all phases of the game.
